links that i found interesting (1/?)
this post has been sitting in my drafts since — checks notes — 13th of May. yeah i've been collecting the links to go in this post for a few months. links are mostly from youtube with a few exceptions. i'll provide a short paragraph about the general contents and why i liked each one.
punch punch forever
this is such a cool series. i feel like it's trying to recreate a very specific feeling and time of watching anime on the internet. the attention to detail is insane. for example subs on the videos have the same quirks like how a translator would sub on a weird piracy site (apologising for stuff going on at the website etc). the animation is phenomenal and it's genuinely really funny.
for profit (creative) software
this video tells a story of how creative software evolved under greedy corporations, eventually forcing artists using them to adopt, migrate and change their workflows time and time again. it is also told alongside a great animation. i found it really interesting to hear this from the side of an artist.
gangstalk: a horror game from the point of view of your stalkers
i think this idea is great and has a lot of potential. i'll keep my eyes on this game when it comes out.
what's up with glass blocks and can i recreate them in unreal?
this video is from the same creator who is working on gangstalk. i really like his style with the retro feeling, 4:3 aspect ratio etc. also this video isn't just about implementing glass blocks in unreal, it dives into the history and even the manufacturing process of them. i think it's pretty interesting.
wordplay
i really like gmtk's videos and analysis of video games. i wasn't expecting him to go dark and suddenly come out with a new game. it seems really fun as well. i might give it a shot once i have some money to spare.
hand drawn minecraft texture pack
this is pretty neat. it's interesting to see the approach of representing colours with patterns and incorprating natural lines into minecrafts traditionally pixel grid textures. not to mention the dedication to literally hand drawing every texture. excited to see what this looks like once it is finished.
ps1 graphics deep dive: implementing silent hill fog in my real ps1 game
this is so interesting! even though i don't get all the technical detail about how it all works i love it. i love the authenticity of making a game for the actual console, rather than trying to mimic it.
this post used to have and still has (in my drafts) a lot more links. i just couldn't get around to providing a paragraph for rest of the videos. i thought i should post what i have instead of it rotting in my notes folder. hope you enjoyed it. i might do a follow up later, who knows.
