my journey with coffee

i've been a coffee drinker for a while now. i wasn't always like this though. the first time i drank coffee was when i was very little. i don't remember it myself but my parents tell me i was curious about coffee and wanted to try it so they gave me a bit of turkish coffee. it was most likely without any sugar and i apparently spat it out and said something along the lines of "is this the coffee you have been drinking all this time?". i was such a blunt kid lol.

and it begins

fast forward to my freshman year in high school, i was in a math class. teacher asked us a hard question and to motivate us, offered coffee as a prize for the one who got it correct. this was in a cram school btw. anyhow i wasn't all that interested in coffee but i had a solution in mind. my answer was correct and so i got those instant coffees as a prize (it was a nescafe 2 in 1)1. i still remember being too awkward to turn it down and trying to finish it during class but it was too bitter for my 15 year old taste buds lol. i tried to sip it but it was a never ending sea of bitter brown liquid. still, even if i didn't like it i appreciate the gesture :D

well my indifference to coffee didn't last forever. i was preparing for the uni exam so of course i was going to get an unhealthy relationship with caffeine sooner or later. i started with sweeter instant coffees and soon went to the ones with just coffee and coffee creamers in them. later it was nescafe gold and classic. classic is just horrible i don't know how i even drank that shit. it's like straight up stomach ulcer fuel.

afterwards i started brewing with a french press. i started with adding a ton of milk then cut down on it until i was adding just a splash of it. i then opted to drink it black because i couldn't be bothered to find milk every time to be honest. i don't really have a sweet tooth either.

a while later bought my first moka pot. i bought a 6 cup one and my reasoning was i could brew 6 cups or anything below that. spoiler alert: it doesn't work that way. i mean you can certainly do it but it's better to just buy a smaller one for that purpose. when i learned i probably shouldn't brew anything other than the cup size i started brewing 6 cups. and drinking them all. daily.

this is a terrible idea and i still don't know how my body was functioning. that's like 200+ mg of coffee. i was all around terrible with the weight of the exam on my shoulders and a heavy revenge bedtime procrastination.2 i was sleeping at 2 am and waking up at 7 for months on end. that might've been why i didn't mind the high caffeine content. later i cut down and stored half of what i brewed in a jar to make cold coffee the next day. if you have a big ass moka pot, this is the way. don't do what i did. not much after i bought a 3 cup one anyways, doing what i should've been doing from the start.

the uni arc

when i went to uni my access to fresh coffee ceased to exist. i was new in town and couldn't find a good place to purchase coffee. this led me to acquire a little hand grinder and buy whole beans from home. it worked for a while but i quickly grew tired of grinding by hand every day and went back to stale but pre-ground coffee. i also bought a filter coffee machine around this time.

and this is the small hand grinder i am talking about

well if you saw my latest posts you know where this is going. i decided to bite the bullet and buy an electric coffee grinder. i don't like to spend money on myself but god damn this is the best purchase i've ever made in a long ass time. it's worth every penny and has brought me so much joy. with being able to change the grind size i went ahead and cleaned my old moka pots.3 i want to experiment and not just drink filter coffee now. i'm glad the coffee grinder opened up that possibility for me.

liked this post? you can follow my rss feed for more. i'd also appreciate if you toasted this post below. 🍞

  1. i'm not sponsored, nestle is a shitty company anyways.

  2. if you don't know revenge bedtime procrastination is when you can't spend the day doing the stuff you enjoy so you cut down on the time spent sleeping and try to take control of the day by doing the stuff you enjoy doing. it's like the day isn't over until i say so kind of thing. not healthy. do not recommend.

  3. you should clean them by putting vinegar in them and putting them on the stove without ground coffee. then you can run them with just water in them for a couple of times to get rid of the taste of vinegar. at least this is what i've been doing, i'm no coffee snob, throw them in the dishwasher if you want, i'm never gonna do that to my babies though. oh you can also get gaskets for them on the internet, those need replacing as well.
