phenomena (1985)
I first heard about this movie on a clock tower video essay. now I didn't play any of the clock tower games but I really dig the atmosphere of the first game and want to play it. anyhow movie's synopsis of a sleepwalker bugtalker girl and a serial killer on the loose caught my attention and I decided to give it a shot.
I have to say I really enjoyed it. it's got its own charm with a heavy metal soundtrack and a weird plot that at times went through such a tonal whiplash that I couldn't help but burst out laughing. it can get gory and disgusting (if you know the film you know the scene) but it also has some beautiful scenes. the dialogue sometimes gets unintentionally funny but I think that in a weird way adds to the whole experience.
one of the things I learned about phenomena is in one scene they incubated 2 million fly eggs and coated an actor in glucose to attract them after they hatched. also the chimpanzee was apparently a pain to work with. it managed to scar an actress with a dull razor blade and bit off another actress's finger off during filming. thankfully they managed to attach the finger back. that said chimpanzee also ran off and did not come back for three days and forest rangers had to lure it back with food.
uhh where was I? yeah, this is a weird film. watch it if it caught your interest and probably stay away from it if you can't stand bugs.
